A little about me

My name is Jacob Paul Krank and I am a photographer living in Jackson Hole Wyoming.  My love of nature draws me to the wilderness where I enjoy capturing images to share with others.

My love of nature began with my childhood and adolescence fishing, hunting, camping, and exploring the great outdoors of Minnesota, filling rolls of film on my little cardboard disposable cameras.  Annual trips "up North" opened my eyes to the vastness of wilderness and later trips West enticed me with the rugged beauty and endless possibilities for exploration, adventure, and excitement in the Mountains.  I moved to Summit County Colorado at the age of 20 where I absolutely fell in love with exploring the varying landscapes of the Rockies.  My interest in taking pictures evolved into a passion for photography as I desired to capture images that could begin to do justice to the beautiful scenes I was witnessing.  After 7 years in Colorado I visited Jackson Hole, Wyoming and there was no going back... except to get the rest of my belongings as I made it my home almost instantly.  The surrounding National Parks, Forests, and wilderness are some of the wildest and most beautiful on earth and always keep me inspired to get out and explore with my camera by my side.  While Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks never fail to deliver opportunities for beautiful photographs, I find myself drawn more and more to the surrounding wilderness areas where peace, quiet, and solitude are more attainable.  Finding the end of every dirt road and exploring off trail may not always produce images that will make it to the wall, but the experience and undisturbed connection with nature is essential nourishment for my soul.

I am fortunate to work for the legendary nature photographer Thomas Mangelsen.  I work in his gallery in Jackson, Wyoming as an art consultant, assisting clients to acquire work from Tom's collection.  I really enjoy being able to converse with so many people about photography, nature, and all the things I love on a daily basis but the most rewarding parts are being able to speak with people about conservation, to help people find a deeper connection with nature, and inspire people to consider pursuing photography themselves.  It is extra special when I feel as though I may have inspired one of the kiddos that comes through as they are the future ambassadors of our natural world.  I have been able to learn so much from being in the gallery but have also been incredibly inspired by Tom's photography.  I was a big admirer of his work when I first came across one of his galleries years ago while living in Colorado.  At the time I was just beginning my transition from picture taking to dabbling in photography and seeing not only Tom's images, but how he applied himself as a photographer to so many conservation efforts is what really inspired me to further pursue my relatively new found passion.  I am grateful to not only work for him, but to consider him a cherished friend.

I feel it is important to not only take nature photographs, but to give back to nature.  I have been fortunate to assist some of my favorite conservation organizations with their missions to protect our natural world.  Whether it is contributing my images for social media posts, donating prints for fundraising, volunteering to deliver bear resistant trash cans for JH Bear Solutions, or assisting with setting and checking camera traps to track and monitor Mountain Lions for The Cougar Fund, it is incredibly rewarding and fulfilling to to be able to participate in every conservation effort I can.
